SEO - Search Engine Optimisation. The holy grail of where Google shows you when someone types in a search.
Good SEO means people are more likely to visit your website (which means you can show them how amazing you are). Bad SEO means you're relegated to a page no one visits and your ability to talk to possible clients goes down :(
Here are my top 5 ways that YOU can use your business blog to improve SEO, today.
1. Consistency is key
Blogs are a great way to update the content on your website. Frequently updated websites generally rank higher for SEO. Consistently updating your website (through blogs) is a great way to show that your site is relevant.
2. Key words
Use 'key words' throughout your blog, but don't use them so much your blog becomes unreadable. Use 'auto fill' on Google search (what Google tries to fill in for you as you type a question) to show you what people are searching for. Think of what words they'd use to describe what you're blogging about. Use key words where possible in the title, first paragraph and then throughout the blog. You don't need expensive key word generators or analysis as long as you're focused on writing the words your readers would use.
3. Answer questions
People tend to type in questions to search engines. Like, "What can I eat on a gluten free diet?". If you answer this question on a blog, using the heading "Here's what you can eat on a gluten free diet", this is called a "long-tail key word" and helps SEO no end. Readers will also see the heading and be attracted to it, if they typed that question into a search box.

4. User experience
Remember SEO means nothing if people aren't getting the right message from your blog. If you're writing it in the wrong language, using phrases that don't connect, writing all in one very, very, very long paragraph then user experience goes way down. Write with your reader in mind and they stay longer on the page ... which all does well SEO-wise too! Pretend to be your user and sit down and read the blog.
5. Use the strange web bits
Meta-tag descriptions, customised URLs, Alt-text for pictures. All these things are there to help show off your blog.
Meta-tag description is also called SEO post description. Use it like a very short, to the point lead in for what your reader will learn.
Use your header in the SEO post title or custom URL, and make sure there's a key word in there too.
Alt-text your pictures - this turns your picture into words. Use Alt-text keyword e.g. gluten free diet list.
